Finance question

How much SIP should I invest every month to reach ₹1 crore?

Last updated 2026-09-17

Quick answer

At an assumed 12% annualised return, a ₹1 crore goal takes roughly ₹10,200 a month for 20 years, or about ₹21,000 a month for 15 years. At 10% you need more SIP for the same deadline. Markets do not pay a fixed 12% — treat every rupee here as a planning model. For live step-up, reverse timing and editable target, use the SIP for ₹1 crore article.

Open SIP

The return assumption is the whole story

Equity SIPs can finish well above or below 12%. Debt will usually sit lower. Enter a conservative rate in the SIP calculator if the goal is non-negotiable (a child’s year-18 corpus). The interactive SIP for ₹1 crore article adds step-up, an existing lumpsum field, and a reverse “when do I hit the target” timer on the same engine.

Worked example

Target ₹1 crore, 20 years, 12% assumed. The required SIP is the P that makes the SIP future-value formula equal ₹1 crore. Invested principal is P × 240; the rest is modelled compounding, not a promised gain.

Formula

FV = P × ((1 + r)^n − 1) / r × (1 + r), with r = assumed annual rate ÷ 12 and n = months. Solve for P to hit FV = ₹1 crore.

Things to consider

  • Inflation will make ₹1 crore less powerful in 20 years — see the inflation question.
  • Do not chase 12% in a debt fund just because this table used 12%.
  • Monthly compounding SIP formula used by the site calculator.
  • No taxes, exit loads or missed SIPs.

FAQs

No. It is a planning rate many equity long-term illustrations use. Your SIP can lose value.
